Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden

Where Remembrance and Alliance Endure

The Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden stands as a living memorial honoring the 67 British citizens who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and the enduring alliance between the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and the United States. This identity system was created to reflect the garden’s dual role: a contemplative urban sanctuary and a symbol of shared history, sacrifice, and unity. The work spans environmental graphics, commemorative materials, print collateral, and a flexible visual language designed to live across physical and ceremonial touchpoints.

Creative Direction

The Garden’s mission—remembrance and transatlantic friendship—guided the creation of a contemporary identity that feels dignified without being austere and symbolic without becoming literal. The system honors tradition while functioning in a modern civic context, designed to live across permanent elements such as engraved stone, signage, and architecture, as well as event programs, publications, and commemorative objects. Inspired by English garden planning, heraldic geometry, and carved stonework, the identity centers on a structured radial floral mark whose interlocking forms symbolize growth, unity, and the enduring alliance between nations. A restrained palette of crimson, stone, forest green, and black references ceremonial tradition and the Garden’s materiality, while refined typography and generous spacing create a tone of quiet authority—an identity designed to feel timeless, grounded, and built to endure.

The Impact

The resulting system provides the Garden with a cohesive and enduring visual presence. It strengthens recognition across ceremonial events, publications, and donor materials while elevating the Garden’s position as a cultural landmark in New York City. By embedding symbolism into a refined, adaptable design language, the identity supports the Garden’s mission beyond a single moment of remembrance. It reinforces the narrative of shared sacrifice and lasting alliance—ensuring that the story of unity between nations continues to be cultivated, season after season.
